Know Everything About the Ear Gauges

Standard Piercings are the thing of the past and the latest popular trend is the ear gauges. Standard piercing has limitations and you can only do a limited alteration and experimentation. An ear gauge is something that takes you a step further.

What's ear gauging?

Ear gauge means changing the size of the hole in your ears by stretching it out, resulting in a bigger and rounder hole. Afterwards different type of earrings can be used to fill it up or it can be opened with a flesh tunnel.

Sizing the Ear gauge

There are two ways to measure earhole size

•             Gauges (g)

•             Millimeters (mm)

In the gauges system, a smaller number depicts a larger size. Standard sizes are 20g and 18g which are quite small. You progress further in the decreasing numbers till you reach size 00g after that the sizing is in fractions. This system is not exact and sizes may vary from company to company. You can gauge your ears by any of these two methods

• Tapers method - A taper is the safest method for the beginners and it is quite popular up to the 00g size. In this, a taper is used to increase the piercing size. A few types of tapers that are popularly used are acrylic, steel and concave steel.

• Taping method - This method is used after reaching 00g. In this, a tape is used by wrapping it around the current plug or the ear tunnels and repeating the process gradually till you reach your desired size. There are two types of tapes that are used one is PTFE Tape and another is Bondage Tape.

These gauges are not permanent and the ear eventually shrinks back. The time it takes the ear to shrink back varies from person to person.
